bytemine was founded in 2003 by Holger Rode and Felix Kronlage as 'bytemine GbR' in Oldenburg.
By that time the focus of bytemine was individual software development and traditional webhosting. Due to the liking of Linux and open-source software from 2004 on some projects in the fields of infrastructure, networking and remote access where realized.
In 2005 the product idea cryptorage has been awarded by the Gründercampus Niedersachsen. The federal state of Lower Saxony decorates founders having exceptional ideas with this award. The prototype Webshare was introduced at first customers already in 2004.
A further product from the beginning of bytemine has been the UMTS access point: an OpenBSD based router to access the internet via WLAN and LAN by using an UMTS module.
By the end of 2006 Holger Rode left the company and Felix Kronlage gets the sole owner.
From 2007 on bytemine mainly implemented OpenBSD projects by offering consultancy and development, and continuously enhanced our hosting services. We also strengthend our position in being the 2nd and 3rd level support for medium-sized companies.
These intentions were intensified from 2008 to 2012 by achieving partnerships with Zarafa, Univention and SEP. Still product development is an important element of the company's strategy.
Main products were the bytemine openbsd appliance as well as the OpenVPN configuration tool bytemine manager. In 2011 the relaunched cryptorage summed up the portfolio.
In 2009 the form of enterprise got changed into 'bytemine GmbH'. A further big step was getting part of the otris software AG - Felix Kronlage stays managing partner by holding 49% of the shares.
2014 the hosting business has grown to four locations (2 x Frankfurt, 2 x Zurich), and bytemine offers 24/7 by-call support, maintenance contracts and enduring, high-class system management.
In the years 2015 and 2016 the infrastructure database (idb) as well as OpenVPN4UCS are added to the product portfolio of bytemine. The release of OpenVPN4UCS further strengthens our commitment towards business solutions like the Univention Corporate Server.
Dr. Christoph Niemann, Member of the board of the otris software AG, joins the management board of bytemine as CEO. Due to their long standing commitment to the company Holger Rasch and Daniel Rauer become partners of bytemine.
In 2017 Daniel Rauer has been given procuration.
At the turn of the year 2017/2018 Felix Kronlage leaves bytemine after 15 years; his position as director has been handed over to Daniel Rauer.
